I rarely slept. I knew I had to try to do something to end the horror of this nightmare.”

How did you become involved in the movement against sex trafficking and sexual exploitation?

I don’t have any deep answers to that. In fact, I’m going to be very honest and put my cards on the table about this. I was just looking to have fun when I discovered social media (Twitter and Facebook). Eventually, I happened upon Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore talking about human trafficking. Frankly, I thought they were very cool people and I wanted them to think I was cool. So, I started following them. As I continued to read their comments, I was led to survivors, victims, activists and groups working to end human trafficking. And I totally lost my heart to the victims, and to this cause. My passion stems from being a victim once myself. When I was 18, I thought I knew it all – enough to keep me from trouble, but didn’t know that trouble would come looking for me. I left home to live on my own. After having been in several negative and abusive relationships, I was all alone. A young lady and I became friends. She was the best, was always there, encouraged me, bought me clothes, took me to get my hair and nails done. We were great friends.

“I believe that education is the key to dealing with human trafficking,” says William Eberle, Anti-Human Trafficking Advocate. Four years ago William heard the story of sex trafficking survivor, Carissa Phelps, through David Sauvage’s film project. Since then, he has been active in the fight against human trafficking. He explains what he does, why he does it, and how he goes about it, as well as showing how anyone can get involved and join the fight too.

How did you become involved in the movement against sex trafficking and sexual exploitation?

This is kind of a long story as it was a journey, not so much a revelation, but I’ll keep it short. It started with a song of all things, “Carissa’s Song” by Mandi Perkins. I liked Mandi’s music and saw the proceeds from this song were going to The Carissa Project, a film project by David Sauvage to share the story of Carissa Phelps who is a survivor of sex trafficking. Carissa’s story was so horrific that it truly shocked me, yet it is also a story of triumph, joy, and hope. This all started about four years ago for me.

This led me to trying to educate myself on the issue of, initially, sex trafficking and then human trafficking. I don’t think I will ever forget the nights I stayed up until 2AM listening…
